Tuskegee University
The State Normal School was established by Lewis Adams (a former slave) and George Campbell (a former slave owner). The original location was in a shanty, built on the grounds of the Butler Chapel A.M.E. Church, in Tuskegee, AL. They were able to get funds for teacher salaries from the Alabama Legislature and they secured the schools's principal from Hampton University. That person was Booker Talifero Washington.
Classes began on July 4th, 1881, in 105 degree heat, using an old shanty. |
